A message from the Chairman

1 Feb 2018 by John Swannick

As discussed at last night’s annual general meeting, there will be a series of dedicated communications over the next few weeks explaining the proposed changes to the Club structure and implementation of the Club Development Plan.

There will also be weekly ‘drop-in’ sessions at the Club on Sundays, 12-2.00pm, when members can get more information in the run-up to an extraordinary general meeting in April.

In the meantime, please find below the Chairman’s Report 2018.

“As I said in my report last year – now is a great time to be involved in Staplehurst Cricket and Tennis Club. It is going from strength to strength and there are lots of exciting developments happening – this is one of the most significant stages in the Club’s history. I’m not going to go into too much detail now because there will be a series of dedicated communications on the proposed plans but suffice to say after nearly one and a half years of delays we finally got planning permission agreed in August and have now sold the land (subject to contract)!

The general committee and relevant sub-committees have been tirelessly working behind the scenes over the past few months – mulling over numerous plans and different options – as well as negotiating with various bodies for grants to make sure that we get the best possible outcome to benefit all members, in all sections of the Club, and also to find the best ways of generating the most income.

Cricket has been a great success – we have had more players than ever available to play on Saturdays and Sundays and the highlight was the first team being promoted to the Kent League. We will hear more about this from Tom Davey and the other captains when they give their reports on the season.

And this year we finally got COVERS – thanks to the generosity of Ray Jenkins and Homeleigh and a £4,000 grant from the Kent Cricket Board.

The tennis section has been reinvigorated with our new partnership with Hotshotz Tennis. Zane Cheeseman and Jack Lusher have brought renewed energy to the club and their coaching sessions are becoming more and more popular.

The Petanque Club had a good, if rather wet, season and we look forward to welcoming them back again next summer. They are looking for new members and have just set up a Facebook page if anyone is interested.

The Mid-Kent 5 Miler was its most successful this year and raised £3,000 for the Club. Massive thanks once again to Nick and Tina Jordan for a well organised event and for their generosity towards the Club.

The beer festival weekend went really well – we had three days of cricket, the weather was great, we had lots of visitors from both the club and the village, live bands and there was a great atmosphere at the club all weekend. And to top it off we took over £3,500 over the bar!

Other social events went well but we really need support from all members to help make them even better and to increase the fund raising contributions. Tracy Trevett also introduced the meat raffle this year and that has proved very popular – the next draw is on 11th February and tickets are available behind the bar.

I would like to finish with a few thank yous:

Ray Jenkins – as he comes to the end of his Presidency – thank you for all your help and support during the last two years – it really has made a difference and is very much appreciated.

To all members of the general committee for their hard work and continued commitment to the Club.

To the club scorers, umpires and tea ladies without whom cricket matches would not be possible.

And finally, to Alan Reader for his continued hard work and dedication."
