England star joins junior coaching team

3 Feb 2017 by John Swannick

We are delighted to announce that recently retired England women’s international star Lydia Greenway will be joining our junior coaching team this summer. Playing over 200 times for England, Lydia has also recently been appointed player/coach to Kent women.

We will be launching CricketForGirls with Lydia at Staplehurst School on March 20 and she is overseeing a specialist girls coaching programme at the Club over the summer running alongside our existing Sunday morning junior sessions.

The Club’s junior programme has always been open to girls and we usually have a number who train and play alongside the boys with mixed group cricket at U9 and U11. We have even produced a couple of players for Kent girls county teams in the past and head coach, Peter Cavender, is also the Kent U13 Girls Performance Coach.

But we have long recognised the need to more effectively cater for 50% of the local youth market and a girls-specific offering is critical to building long term commitment and increasing the engagement of girls and their families in the Club.

CricketForGirls will be open to girls of all ages and all abilities, particularly those who would like to begin playing for the first time. Although we expect the majority to fall into the ages 7-13 range, our intention is to grow coverage over time, perhaps even building on our successful Staplehurst Ladies 6-a-side team.
